Early Fall At The Fur Peace Ranch

Fall skies here in Southeast Ohio are unmistakable and the River Of Time flows to the sea as it always does. It has been four years since my old band mate Marty Balin passed. Even though I rarely saw him but we were young together and I miss his presence. These days people my age say goodbye more than hello… and so that goes.

Driving from Athens to Meigs this afternoon.

All storms must pass… but the landscape may look different.

To be continued…

Our Anne had a serene association with one of our gracious host’s songs – that through driving the Blue Ridge Highway, me having placed A Life Well Lived, Water Song, In the Moment on the iPod. Dad too, I suppose.

I’m sorry for your troubles, Brian. Was missing the mother myself yesterday, having come across a picture I took one mothers day. I’ll light a candle for yours at Graymoor in Garrison, if it helps. I do that in memory of Anne, from time to time.

Shit, man, I got so busy talking about me, I forgot my manners. Sincerest condolences on the loss of your mother. Hope all this chaos doesn’t hinder her last rites.

My heart’s with you, brother. I rode out a strong Cat 3 in ‘05. I was 70 mi. inland, so surge wasn’t a worry, but five hours of a cannonball rolling overhead in the pitch dark will tax the stoutest of folk. I was blessed with minimal property damage, but had to live off a 6500W generator in 100 degree heat for two weeks. The thing that stands out the most to this day is the way people came together. Disasters have a way of melting personal differences. You got your life, stuff’s just stuff (had a house fire, too), and the good folk of Florida will show your best colors in pulling through this calamity. Peace.

Sorry about your Mom. Thanks for keeping us updated on the Island over the years and this hurricanes path. This was “The Big One”.
I saw the damage to the bridge and homes. To see Sanibel and Captiva in such bad shape is heartbreaking. Glad you’re safe.

    FYI: Off-Topic

My mother died during the hurricane of old age…

Sun Dial reported 20 foot surge through second floor…

Saw overview image of other houses in my neighborhood and they were standing but obviously destroyed with 1/3rd blown out in scattered sticks…

Took my Jefferson Airplane CD’s with me…

I am OK in safe undamaged place in Ft Myers…

    Hell of a hurricane…

Hey Brian… we talked about your mom… sorry for your loss. Perhaps she is having a cup of tea with my mom… perhaps. As for Florida and its recovery, up here in Ohio we pray for a moderately speedy recovery.

      Stay safe…

    Jorma,

you hit the nail on the head when it comes to old friends, working and/or partying friends saying Goodbye more then Hello. I’ll be 69 in November and it seems that I hear of one or two of my old working buddies slipping the veiled curtain to pass to the other side and answering that old question “Who Comes Here?”. Keeping that in mind, I found out what kind of Cancer I have, it’s called Waldenstroms Macroglobulinemia, it’s a very rare and SLOW acting blood cancer, so I may yet have a couple or three years to get back to Meigs County to meet you and watch you perform. I missed your concert up in South Lake Tahoe Nevada by 1 day, it was only 20-30 minutes from my home and I would have slipped the guy at the entrance a $100 bill to watch it.

On another note, when you played with Janis Joplin 6-25-1964 in San Francisco you performed Hesitation Blues. Were you using a flat pick and Hybrid Picking or did you have a thumb and finger pics to play the tune???

Jorma, it looks like you got outta Dodge just in time. You just missed one of the biggest hurricanes to hit Southern Florida in history. It made landfall on Cayo Costa which is just north of Captiva and Sanibel Islands. You just left there – wow. I spent many winter vacation on both and they were gems. They are both probably underwater. I hope not.

You said it, Jorma. I’m “only” 68, but relatives, friends, acquaintances are already slipping away. I feel so fortunate that my two best friends from high school are still my two best friends, and we’ll see each other on Sunday.
Much wisdom in the song “Someone’s Calling.” It goes real quick, doesn’t it?
