It was more than great to have Dave Alvin back at the Fur Peace Station. He brought the Guilty Ones with him this time and nowhere was their guilt more positively displayed. Dave was joined by Lisa Pankratz on drums, Brad Fordham on bass, and Chris Miller on guitar. Dave and the gang put on a master class about well… how it’s done. From delicate sonic filigrees to balls to the wall explosions, this was a show for me and everyone who was at the Station last Saturday to remember. Thanks team… hope to intersect with you all again down the road!
Sunday morning Mr. John Hurlbut and I showed up at the Beatrice Love Kitchen ready to pick and sing some tunes for the guests who stayed overnight at the Ranch. I kicked the morning gig off with a new tune for me written by my friend Frank Goodman called Where Have My Old Friends Gone? It just reminded me, ‘Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer to the end you get, the faster it goes,’ Putting that thought aside I was about to note Hurl’s and my morning set list and then I realized I didn’t write it done and the memory of it is gone like a summer breeze.
No matter… it was a good time.
Onward!
They’s some good stuff here. First hour is a PBS documentary done in ‘78. Then it goes into the making of it. Alan Lomax project.

Happy belated 4th of July to all my favorite nieces and nephews out there.

We saw the Alvins years ago as The Blasters – what a high energy rockin time! I can only imagine what Dave does now.
We went to see Larry and Jenny Keel Friday night in Marietta, along with a local band O-Y-O. Fantastic show. The Keels opened, then Larry played a few with OYO. My favorite moment was when he let off a string of absolutely smokin lead notes; I looked over at the banjo player and he just turned and shook his head.
Peace and Love this week for Ringo’s birthday tomorrow, m
” DA has so many great stories.”
And one more: The Nine Volt Heart has some airplay on a small FM station here in Germany. Lyrics translated, too.
Go on, folks!

Thanks for hosting Dave Alvin and the Guilty ones .Whew ,what a show .I suspect you might get a structural engineer to check the integrity of the rafter ,outside wall connections at the barn as they almost blew the roof off the joint .
Chris Miller added particularly subtle as well as dynamic leads in support of Alvin .Chris’s playing reminded me of Johnny Vaughan in the Fabulous Superlatives ,he moved from Texas twang ,to supportive rythems,to nasty slide and standup electric lead ,always at the right time .
The band chugged along ,from one great song to the next .
As an interesting aside ,while tracking their tour ,we assumed that Jimmy Dale Gilmore would accompany them to the ranch ( we are NOT regretting missing him ), as there was not much you could add to this already great show .
Both Wendy and I wore our obligatory Lebowski T’s ,mine “-Your over the line “, &Wendys -“Calmer then you”.We didn’t feel like complete idiots as there was in evidence another with an “Urban Achiever “, t shirt.
Thanks ,and what a great show.
Great to see Izzie ,she was poised ,generous of spirit and ran a great concession stand ,bright future.
She’s grown up .
The immeasurably gracious host,in John is well worth the drive from Kentuck.
The show was sufficiently impressive that we booked our selves a flight and bought tickets for the show at the Fillmore in Oct/November (??)), in San Fran where Alvin will play at the Los Lobos 50 th ( hope they play Bertha).
Thanks All

Dave and the Guilty Ones never fail to satisfy! He’s a force of nature, we’re so glad he is doing well and out there rockin’ again. Love that guy.
Jorma, spot on about DA & The GO’s! Wow…what an incredible show! Thank you, Vanessa, Hurl, and the FPR staff for hosting yet another incredible music event! I knew it’d be a great show and it far surpassed that expectation by miles. Also, really enjoyed catching up with you before the show and much appreciation for sharing those Mark Markham vinyl treasures. The gang really appreciated your kindness. Looking forward to seeing you down the road. BTW – there’s been a 3-part interview series on XM’s Buddy (Miller) & Jim (Lauderdale) Show with Dave Alvin. Two episodes have already aired and the next is due in a week or so. DA has so many great stories. I think the aired episodes can still be accessed. Thanks again, Jorma! Music is good for the heart, mind, body, and soul.
