We just completed the Eighth Annual Tribute To The Rev. Gary Davis at the Fur Peace Ranch. Roy Book Binder was one of the luminaries and the Rev. Robert Jones from Detroit was the other. Both gentlemen are dear friends and it was great to see them again as well as getting a chance to play some music together. The weather was beautiful Friday and Saturday. Sunday night some rain came in, but we needed that. The moon rise Saturday night was outstanding.

Our show at the Fur Peace Station was quite a different beast this time. John Hurlbut set the stage like the Johnny Carson Show and we proceeded humorously in that vein.Lots of yucks, let me tell you! I went on first and here is my set list:

rev weekend 1a
Indeed, Robert Jones is a national treasure as well. His original songs have touched my heart for years and Saturday night was no exception. It was grand to have him back.

Roy and I go back to when we were both… well, younger men. He just gets better and better with each passing year. I find much of his current work absolutely breathtaking.

Our classes we all outstanding… old friends and new, another great weekend at the Ranch. Today after everyone was gone I went down to the Ohio River to do some shopping in Pomeroy. The sun was setting… the 2010 is pulling into the stretch as well as October.

I just love where we live.

Back at home in the evening I cooked meatballs for the girls.

How good does it have to get?

Thanks for another great Rev. Gary Davis show! My friend Mike Z. and I really had a great time. I thought the show format was really cool as well. I never heard Rev. Robert perform before and I must say he was right in the pocket! Hurl was a great MC as well! I will be back for more shows next year…Lord willin’!

This is a bit off topic. Well, totally off, but I just wanted to share that yesterday I downloaded 2 of the recent adds on itunes: Hot Tuna, 7-20-10 w/ Steve Earle and 2-20-10 (Jorma and GE). Both are absolutely great performances and the sound quality on both is perfect! I do think that the availability of the new shows should get a higher profile — The old emails from Hot Tuna Tunes were very informative re: new shows being available for download. I only found these new shows by stumbling onto itunes. Anyway, great, great stuff!

Sounds like the Seinfeld episode when Kramer re-built the Merv Griffin set in his apartment

Sooo…I’m guessing the “binder” for the meatballs was of course……..Crackers….Laden with butter!!!!!!….mmmmmmmm…..I GOTTA get that FPR Tasty Licks Cookbook next time I’m at the Ranch

I was at FPR Reverend Gary Davis weekend 2008….Me and a couple of other lucky Ranchers got a couple of hours of “porch time” with Roy after the as always amazing Saturday night show (Also featuring Ernie Hawkins, Bill Ellis, and You)….The stories and tunes lasted until about 2:30 a.m. Sunday…One of my many special FPR memories to share with the Grandkids someday

Have fun this weekend with the next batch of pickers…’twill be another bumber crop I am sure
