First of all… to my good friends at the Raccoon Lodge. I had planned a nice song dedication for you guys last night. It was such a windy evening that all my well laid plans vanished with the papers that wouldn’t stay anchored. I’ll make it up to y’all at the Beacon… promise. For those who might wonder who or what they heck is the Raccoon lodge, it’s a grand bunch of men and women who manage to do a lot of good works and have fun along the way. To Jimmy and the gang, I love you all!

Back to the GSBMF… My old pal Paul and his merry gang in the form of Jefferson Starship were on this great bill and I really enjoyed their set!

We were in the ORCH seats. Had I known that you were up there, I certainly would have invited you to join us.
You are always on these blog comments, as a cool, quality person.

Neil Young is my favorite to see in concert. (I love Jorma and Jack, Hot Tuna) although with Neil, well, I am mesmerized by him. I enjoy his stage patter and his outspoken nature while up there. You never know what he’s going to say, e.g.:
“…it’s on my mind…nobody can say shit anymore…but, that’s another story”.

Andriy turned to me and said (as he is wont to do, these days):
    “Try saying THAT in Russia!”
“Try doing THAT in Russia !”@Hamneggs

Oh, I’m so happy to read that you were at Jones Beach, too, for that great concert!
    Mr. Ham n Eggs:
did you notice how ,when Neil took the stage; those deep, dark ominous storm clouds which came in on both sides of the amphitheater started to part and then drifted away behind the stage? They went out to sea and we did not get even one drop of rain!
That was a never-before-seen weather experience at Jones Beach. Those clouds bring storms and the tech crew then covered the soundboard. No rain, just a nice breeze.
Something magical happened and Neil was in fine form with that great band “Promise Of The Real”.

Did you get hit with any of those “organic cherries” that Neil threw out into the audience?

    Rock on, Mr.Ham n Eggs !

On the FPR 2013 calendar it’s listed that Hot Tuna first performed as Jorma and Jack on April 13th, 1969. Which is also Jack’s Birthday.

    🙂

Got my tix for the Beacon yesterday! Thanks Jorma. It’s an annual ritual for my husband and I. Any chance you will be playing at the Egg in Albany this year?

1975 for me. That, I guess I like the power trio. Got into / Qauh, acoustic Tuna live, then the power trio. Advanced with the new stuff… caught up with the older stuff later. Loved the Nick Buck stuff. “Talken Bout You”… Think??? I saw Tuna w/ Nick on keyboards circa 77 Tower Theatre, Philly… sooooo loud… Talken Bout You… but found my buddy …zzzzz ing. He’ll never live that one down … If I can help it. 75 first show, Cherry Hill Arena. Only the FLYERS were hotter than Tuna. They didn’t get on stage till 11???. Two warm up bands… Gasoline and Jan Hammer Group. Hour and a half Acoustic… 2 hours Electric. A few months later, a repeat at the Trenton War Memorial. Me and 10 LaSalle friends joined the other 200 people to 3 hours. I was tipped of to watching for “Water Song”, Man’s Fate…. I tip my hat to Eugene Joyce… my buddy… I know he made it to the guitar ranch. I know this because I saw a show at Keswick Theater, 3_4 years ago and happened to get sears next to each other…35 years later. Hello Hugene ( that’s what we called him).

Andriy was not even born then.
I grew up across the street, to The Fillmore East, although I was only 10-years-young.

I saw Jefferson Airplane, before the Fillmore East opened.

I then saw them at The Fillmore East, on May 3rd and 4th, at the Fillmore East.
I was only ten-years-young, so if there is anybody here who is trying to start a competition, I will take that fool down to ChinaTown; on the local or even the express train, or the local bus. I walked there, across the street from where I lived, with my immigrant aunt.

That nudnik is a loser nudnik. He missed that party.
Although you, mike v. , seem to be a good guy.
Who cares “who saw Hot Tuna for the first time” and when that took place?

1973?! What a nudnik, to try to start a competition about that.
Whenever, in whatever year any of you saw Hot Tuna for the first time — it’s all good and you have the memories to enjoy.

    Rock on, mike v.
    you are not a nudnik.

Ah. Never saw JA, did see Starship on their first tour, at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. Chaquico was barefoot, which impressed me, and he was using the orange colored MXR Phase 90, the first of their industrial strength line of effects.

The current guitar player in the Starship, Jude Gold, plays “Embryonic Journey”
I always liked Chaquico on the 70’s era Starship records
(and records like Graces’ “Manhole” and “Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun”)
He had big shoes to fill and he held his own (sort of)
I think he does new age acoustic music now.

Craig was quite a while ago before the 1989 Airplane
they all are pretty damn great in my book
Watching Willie Nelson’s son play with his teeth the other night at Jones Beach reminded me of Craig and Peter K
    Peace Love All Ways
This Airplane/Tuna Starship Freak has got his “guitar” tix today and is mighty happy. The Starship blog has a nice comment about the reaction to Volunteers at a private show for Veterans at a convention in Springfield not sure if Homer and marge made show but sounds like Granpa had a great time.

The guitar player in the Starship does a version of “Embryonic Journey”…
Jorma shoulda shown the kid how it’s REALLY done.
Glad to see Kantner back after his health scare.
I miss seeing him (and his cigarette) standing in front of Café Trieste on Grant Street in North Beach

I just got 6th row center for the Beacon – Thanks Jorma. Call now if you want the best seats. I got a question for you guys – Who saw the earliest Hot Tuna show? I saw the HT trio with Sammy Piazza in April 1973.

  23. Comment made on July 23, 2015 by Asongster

Feeling rather blessed to have just acquired tickets for both the Beacon shows. A little over three years ago I decided, while listening to Jorma’s Stars in My Crown album, to pick up a guitar for the first time at 53. Now I don’t know how I lived without it. We were at this summer’s shows at Cabot and Payomet….so special….as well as a Jorma solo performance and many others. I manage my expectations before each show now that I’ve seen more than a dozen pretty quickly thinking it’s unreasonable to think it could stay as fresh and surprising but this year I’ve left shaking my head each time. The music started off great our first show at the Infinity some years ago but something really special and beautiful has been building since then. Not to mention that even when I go see other acts it’s 50/50 larry campbell is onstage. Go to see Bromberg and his new multi guy had a commitment so….here’s Larry. Go see Shindell and Kaplansky and there is larry on stage with them AND he opens with Theresa. $30 ticket gets $300 worth of music…..if you are even into putting price tags on this and I’m not. Jorma we were there for Jack’s 70th last year and look forward to hearing you cap what has really been a remarkable year of music. peace and our family’s (adult kids have been to shows with us) kindest regards to you and your immediate and Hot Tuna families.

@mmike v – check out this TunaBase page if you haven’t already:
    http://www.tunabase.com/setlists/1968/19681013.html

Suggests a HT billing on 10/13/68. Though Jorma and Jack had played a couple of shows together, but not billed as HT, before that one.

Look at the attachment on the 4/11/69 page – is that your poster?

thanks for your info guys….well I did some digin on the old interwebb and I think it was before that.1970 filmore that is…. I have a poster I found at a yard sale and it had only the day no year but found on the web the hot tuna played gig at the pepperland auditorium with quicksilver on the poster hot tuna billed a night in spirit with the medicine creek nations
I think april 11 1969 so its seems….. just curious the artist Thomas morris

  26. Comment made on July 22, 2015 by charles newman

I’m happy to see Paul is back in the picture. Literally. Jorma is 100% correct about not just jumping in. If it were something like just two people on acoustic guitar playing a simple well known tune that might be one thing but when it’s a whole group and vocalists that’s when you have to have rehearsals sometimes lots of them. By the way, I saw a great comment on a video of Jorma. The guy suggested that the Post Office should do a stamp of Jorma and Jack. How about it Jorma?

@ Mike V: The first Jack & Jorma appearance was supposedly January 27, 1969 at the Matrix San Francisco. However they weren’t yet using the name Hot Tuna.

  29. Comment made on July 22, 2015 by Nick L. Eakins

Alas, some things are just not meant to be. I am so happy with everything Jefferson, whatever incarnation or spin off. Wisdom informs me to be thankful for it all but also to just let things be. Perhaps all that has transpired the last fifty years has had the best of all possible outcomes. I’m not for tinkering with the mechanism. I haven’t been stoned in 17 years but Jorma and Jack’s jamming with Spencer on After Bathing At Baxter’s still flips me out,,,no chemicals required.

  30. Comment made on July 22, 2015 by mike v

I have a question when was the first Hot Tuna show ever not a JA SHOW.. billed as just HOT TUNA ? anyone know?

  31. Comment made on July 21, 2015 by Len

The truth is ,Jorma, that had you and jack joined in you would have overshadowed Paul’s band to the point of embarrassment. You did the class thing ( not surprisingly) by just waiting your turn. Still, a scheduled show with yourself ,jack, Paul, Marty , frieberg, etc would be a wonderful night, no doubt

  32. Comment made on July 21, 2015 by Hamneggs

    Two Cents Here
Years ago at Rocky Sullivan’s the band was playing “Freedom” and I was in the back with great Patrick McGuire and said to jump out there and join in. His response was pretty much what Jorma just wrote. I laughed and understood but the fan in me would have been happy with any result.
Seeing Cathy in the picture of course made me dream because she has recently begun covering “Eat Starch Mom” with the band. So put that on my dream/wish list for the Beacon. Smooth movin steel, give it a feel.
I’ll be happy with whatever comes my way and leave the show happy most of the times overlooking how professional it all is because damn…
You make it look easy and FUN.
This year has been great solo, trio and the Freakin with Larry and Teresa added and whoever wishes to join in singing an early happy birthday to ya.
    Peace
    Love All Ways

Right down by the ocean watching Hot Tuna on a beautiful summer night. I enjoyed all the bands that played – Starship was great – but Tuna was the my favorite – always will be – see you in November!

Amazing show guys! Really blew everyone away, I was amazed at how much you guys fit into under an hour and a half! ALSO, question regarding the Beacon shows: What is included with the VIP Package for the presale? Where is the seating for VIP? Is there a meet and greet? Any information would be appreciated!

Let r rip is right! Rockin show Jack was really hoofin it up! Jorma you and Jack were on fire and Justin was right along with you. Crescent moon and a cool breeze on the bay with the Tuna what more could one ask for. Don’t wanna wish away the summer and fall….but can’t wait for Tuna at the Beacon. Thanks for a great show – love your agenda!!

“I See The Light” to what your saying Jorma. You know we “Can’t Get Satisfied”. We want it louder and “A Little Faster”. “I Wish You Would” “Come Back Baby” on November 20 and 21. I enjoyed State and Capital this weekend. Keep Jellyrolling it out. Thanks! Goodnight! Now where’s that “Bowlegged Woman”?

  38. Comment made on July 20, 2015 by Susan

It was a great show, and yes, we were happy with what we got! But, there was something just plain wrong about seeing Jefferson Starship playing White Rabbit and Somebody to Love, without Jack and Jorma, who if not right there on the side of the stage for those songs (they were before the set’s end), were just yards away in their bus. What gives? 3 great bands from the Fillmore days, with members who’ve played in each, and yet none shared their stage??

    • Comment made on July 20, 2015 by Jorma

Susan… time goes on… I was pleased to see Paul and his guys. One doesn’t just get on stage and jam with someone’s band when you have never played with them. It’s unprofessional and it’s intrusive. I have not played those songs with those folks ever… and not with Paul for decades It’s not just like riding a bike. Think about this… it’s a lifetime ago. I wish everyone the best but I have my own artistic agenda.

      Nuff said…
