From the South Rim

After the second night at the Sweetwater I flew to Phoenix to meet Vanessa and Izze and we drove up to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for a couple of days. I had been here in the Fall of 2003 with my pal Jerry on our still memorable Rt. 66 by motorcycle trip. The weather up in the Canyon had been iffy at best, but on this day… it was perfect.

Ir’s hard not to take a great picture art the Grand Canyon on a day like this. I just picked a couple for the blog.

I get it... I'm not the only guy who's got one!

We could only get so far on Bright Angel, but it was awesome!

Did Bright Angel and slept at the bottom in the heat in fall ’91…

They had a Greyhound deal that summer coast to coast 59 dollars with unlimited stops within one month…Did California Sierras John Muir Trail and saw Yosemite…Climbed Whitney…I like California…

Great non-east coast green colors and reds…

    Awesome pictures.

I love the scene at the end of the movie, Grand Canyon. Staring into its immensity, depth and beauty, sort of dissipates any conflicting views or class distinctions.

If you’re going to Woodstock 50 we’re in for a good time. I’m going on Sunday August 18th it’s the day Hot Tuna The Zombies and Canned Heat are playing. I hope Canned Heat plays ‘Going Up The Country’ which is such a Woodstock anthem. I just love The Zombies and of course Hot Tuna. It’s gonna be a great summer.

I see Tuna are performing at the “Woodstock” show with Pussy Riot also on the bill…Pussy Riot?…I think they were at the original festival..they performed AFTER Hendrix on the Monday morning if I’m not mistaken. Good lawd a-mighty as the Rev would say!

Watkins Glen sits in The Finger Lakes region of New York State. The Finger Lakes were formed when the glaciers came down. The Algonquin Indians believed God reached down with His fingers and formed the lakes. They’re deep – Seneca Lake is over 600 feet deep. It is the excellent climate for vineyards. Some of the finest wine anywhere. For hotels I recommend The Glenora Inn in Dundee about 10 miles north from Watkins Glen or La Tourelle in Ithaca about 20 miles away. At Glenora you’ll be in the vineyards on Seneca Lake. At La Tourelle you’ll be at a French chateau in the countryside.

Damn, that’s a long assed ways from here, but I might just have to bust open my piggy bank and head yonder way. That last day looks like dynamite. Canned Heat warming up some Hot Tuna? That’s as close to the way-back machine as I’ll ever get. I might have to see if some of you closer to the source can help me score tics. I’ll be watching the website.

It will be an opportunity to hear electric Tuna at high volume and in an outdoor setting………pencil me in.

Holy shit. Hot Tuna is playing at Woodstock 50 in Watkins Glen on August 18th. Can’t wait to hear Electric Hot Tuna, John Fogarty and The Zombies.

Wonder if True Religion is an appropriate opener for this huge event? How about an electric Light of the World in the set. If I wrote Genesis I would certainly whip that out. The slow, seductive, crawling version of Genesis on Double Dose is certainly a nice feel/groove, yet there was a keyboard on that and some phase or flanger I do believe.

What would the Rev. have you sing to the masses…or Mom and Jorma senior? Just sayin’. Generations of lost sheep out there.

I always felt if those who have gone before us could insert one more opinion into the world, what would it be, Garcia, Pilate, Lennon, Marley, Saint Paul, Janis, Silas, King David, especially from there new gained perspective of surviving death. All those kids and adults will be a listenin.

Congrats on booking the gig Jorma. I’m sure its a nice payday and what an opportunity to be a light in this world..Don’t hide our lights under a bushel. 22 years of good clean, obedient living has prepared you for this one, and every other one…..What a blast… Jack must be beside himself, or just taking it in stride… Justin must be pumped!!!

PS-Izzy just might to get to meet some of her heroes that weekend too. There are payoffs for living an obedient life.

G-d bless you and your family and your intentions.

Hot Tuna right next to Pussy Riot. Up the rebels gotta Volunteer now!
Nice eclectic line up. If someone will pay for me and Ms Eggs to blog live and give us a three day VIP pass as part of the deal we’re there! Capitalism wouldn’t be that weird. Lol
    Peace

Went to the Grand Canyon in 1973 on my second cross country trip. I was with a Danish girl who wanted to see America. There’s not much heading west until you hit the Rockies. Unless you take 90 and hit the Badlands, Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone. Then you hit the Rockies and San Francisco. Then south to LA and east to the Grand Canyon. Never met a red neck til we pulled into Oklahoma City. Got kicked out of a diner for having long hair. Great trip but I couldn’t wait to get back to NY.

Dick Dale died…Huge source for the California surf sound and a particular esoteric raga sound that morphed into the sound of Great Society and psychedelic music…

It’s places like this awesome place on earth to put things in perspective. Life is precious. I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to finally visit it with my sons after reading about this wonder of our world in a National Geographic issue 40 plus years ago. Unforgettable!

    Hurl rocks!

Live from the FPR feels like you are in the front row at the Station. Ras Hurl n friends and JK. It’s definitely in the soil. Amazing production and sound. Hat’s off to Jorma, Vanessa, Hurl, Myron and the rest of the crew.

    PS
I just realized that my dear old dad (81) and Jack (75) share the same birth date. April 13…If he don’t know Jorma, he don’t know Jack.
