So… just a brief update on this fine Sunday. It’s Spring Break for the High School gang and the Kaukonen Family broke out of their cocoon and headed up go Seven Springs in Pennsylvania to take the girls skiing. We recorded #40 on Wednesday last so we could make this trip. All that being said, I so glad we got back from the slopes in time to grab dinner and get on the chat.

Now I say ‘we’ got back from the slopes which is a loose description. My downhill skiing days are over I fear. I’ll stick to paddle boarding and motorcycle riding. Speaking of riding…. the girls are snow boarding… riding, not skiing. This was made abundantly clear to me. 🙂

OK… the set from last night:

So be it.

I’m going for a hike.

    Hi Jorma,
Thanks for the QC shows – every one is better than the last.
I have a question about two brothers who, I think, would have been schoolmates of yours at The American School in The Philippines. Olaf Harken was in the class of ’57 and his brother Peter is two years older. Olaf wrote about it in his book – https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Times-Boats-Blocks-Business/dp/0996285008 which I read right after “Been so Long”. He names a lot of schoolmates and even said he flew there on a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser! It felt like I was reading parts of his story in your book and yours in his. Any chance you knew him? I can share more if this sounds familiar.

Expat brats share an interesting life style… I was a junior at the AS… ’57 through ’58. Back to DC to graduate in ’59. What a tine!

    @eaglesteve
    Thanks for reminding us.
Sweet guy, and in fine fettle when I first saw the Dead in ’69. I loved the edge he gave that band.

We sure appreciated giving us a “live” show and being there live for us out there in radio dream stream land. Hope you and the family had a great time in PA. Thanks for creating this great new family!

    Hi Jorma,

Glad you got some family R&R. Last night, #40, another terrific show, lots of favorites.

I heard Vanessa mention U-Roy after she noted Bunny Wailer’s passing. U-Roy 1975 album ‘Dread in a Babylon” is a classic.

It would’ve been amazing to have heard you play with Peter Tosh! Can you ‘estimate’ what potential year that invite could have been? Late 70’s, after Felix Pappalardi, Double Dose days?

Did not know the Tosh story, with all the great conversations stirred up during Quarantine shows, maybe you will endeavor to work on a follow-up book to ‘Been So Long’.

Another great one last night ! Thank you !

I’m curious if you have considered dusting off “Sally Where’d You Get Your Liquor From” and/or “Seaweed Strut” ?

I had the privilege of hanging out with you and Jack in your dressing room before a show in Pittsburgh in the late ’80’s. I can’t remember which song it was, but you were warming up playing one of them while I was there.

Once again, thanks so much for the QC series !

My oldest son got into snowboarding when he was in Scouts, so for his HS senior year I took him to visit friends in Colorado and we hit 3 or 4 famous slope areas. Arapaho basin was just beautiful. Anyway, he urged me to give it a try, I dropped out of snowboard school after the first half hour. Thin air was one thing, thin balance and stamina was another. m

Great show last night, Jorma. About those slugs, when they eat the cats’ food, do the cats eat them or are they happy to share?

Speaking of slugs, did you ever play at/go to Slugs’ Saloon in NYC?

    Peace.
